MATSIRGA WATERFALL: For those of you who are looking for a great time when they visit Kaduna, there are quite some amazing places to have a good time which includes the Matsirga waterfall. This waterfall takes its source from springs on the Kagoro hills which cascade from four different natural funnels. It is a tourist delight as well as a perfect spot for relaxation. The water fall empties into a gorge that is naturally enhanced by beautiful rocks. It is located on the outskirts of Kafanchan in Madakiya, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna state. A natural rock shelter at the river bank forms a cover and resting place for picnicking. Like a half umbrella, it provides shade for tourists amidst the wondrous continuous waterfall. This place is perfect for a picnic any time and any day.
FARINRUWA WATERFALL: This waterfall was discovered in the 1950s and since then it has managed to attract hundreds of visitors. The name “Farin Ruwa” translates as “White waters” in Hausa language, which suggests the typical natural beauty exuded by the waterfalls. The clean, crystal clear showers, which are often regarded as sacred by the locals, can be seen hitting the foot rocks of towering granite hills, blowing a cloud of water vapor at its plunge pool. No doubt that this unique cascade could easily compete with the famous Niagara Falls or the Victoria Falls in Zambia. Its spectacular beauty just takes your breath away. It is incredible how nature can do such wonderful things. The water falls from 150m high and the effect is truly unique.
The best time to visit is between April and September, when there is the most water in the river and the waterfall is at its most spectacular. For those that are keen on bird watching, over 148 species have been found in the area around the falls, 15 being of conservation importance. This is undeniably one of the most irresistible sights in Nigeria.
Gurara Falls formed from the river with the same name. It is situated at the border between Minna and Suleja, located in Gurara Local Government; it’s about one and half hour’s drive from Abuja. The environment holds a lot of potentials, which lie unexplored. For starters, there is ample space, just like is obtainable at the Obudu cattle ranch, for the construction of a resort to allow for visitors who wish to run away from the hustle and bustle of Abuja, Minna and other surrounding cities and spend time at the waterfalls. A lover of nature can, however, enjoy time spent at Gurara. In the absence of facilities, a pair of shoes with a good grip is best, or going barefoot (before the weather gets hot) would suffice for walking on the rocks. It is also better to carry one’s refreshment; food, snacks and drinks. There is an on-going plan to develop the waterfall into a resort.
Finally, Awhum Waterfalls, a master peace of Mother Nature that has continually marveled any one that visits the fall. These falls were formed as a result of a huge granite outcrop that allowed the water to form a stream. It is 30 m high and it is found in the proximity of the Awhum monastery.
On approaching the cave leading to the falls you are presented with the following instructions: please adhere very strictly to these:-
(1) Don’t light a candle in the cave.
(2) All Pilgrims can go in together and pray, but where the number does not allow, a group is to spend only 20 minutes and come out.
(3) No deliverance in the following spots:
– The point of arrival
– Along the spring or river
– Inside the cave and Waterfalls
(4) No photographing or filming is allowed.
While in this cave one will barely see the sky above, this is because atop the corridor is a typical rain forest that harbors all kinds of beautiful flora, fauna and wild life.
As one strolls through this stream, you will be walking through cold and warm regions all the way to the falls. This will, no doubt, leave one wondering: how is it that the same stream has several cold and warm regions? This is also a mystery that needs to be investigated.
