A police officer and two civilians have been killed following an attack by suspected armed bandits on Girkau village in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The attack, which occurred on Monday, reportedly began when the assailants stormed the community and opened fire on residents. Security operatives responded after receiving a distress call, leading to a gun battle between the attackers and security personnel.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that one police officer was killed during the exchange of fire. The attackers also set ablaze two operational vehicles belonging to the police and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps before fleeing the scene.

Residents said the two civilians killed in the attack included an elderly man, identified as Bala Wakili, and a young herder who was reportedly shot after refusing to surrender his cattle. Another resident sustained gunshot injuries, while several cattle were rustled during the raid.

Police spokesperson DSP Ahmed Rufai said security personnel have since been deployed to the area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents. He added that efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could assist security agencies in combating criminal activities across the state.
