I was shuffling through the internet as usual and I stumbled upon “jute leaf”. For some seconds I was wondering ‘what kind of leave is that’, so I decided to open the page and read the information. I was surprised to find out that it is the popular “ewedu leaf”. Knowledge and wide reading is indeed really important as this article has opened up to me what I never knew about ‘ewedu’.

Jute leaf known as Ewedu in Yoruba, Achingbara in Igbo and Lalo or Ayoyo in Hausa is a long, soft, slimy and shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads with so many nutritional values. The leaf with the botanical name Corchorus olitorius which was initially a Yoruba soup ingredient is now recognized and eaten by many people in Nigeria.
